Perturbation Theory for Spin Ladders Using Angular - Momentum Coupled Bases

چکیده
We compute bulk properties of Heisenberg spin-1/2 ladders using Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory in the rung and plaquette bases. We formulate a method to extract high-order perturbative coefficients in the bulk limit from solutions for relatively small finite clusters. For example, a perturbative calculation for an isotropic 2 × 12 ladder yields an eleventh-order estimate of the ground-state energy per site that is within 0.02% of the density-matrix-renormalization-group (DMRG) value. Moreover, the method also enables a reliable estimate of the radius of convergence of the perturbative expansion. We find that for the rung basis the radius of convergence is λ c ≃ 0.8, with λ defining the ratio between the coupling along the chain relative to the coupling across the chain. In contrast, for the plaquette basis we estimate a radius of convergence of λ c ≃ 1.25. Thus, we conclude that the plaquette basis offers the only currently available perturbative approach which can provide a reliable treatment of the physically interesting case of isotropic (λ = 1) spin ladders. We illustrate our methods by computing perturbative coefficients for the ground-state energy per site, the gap, and the one-magnon dispersion relation.

Mean-Field Theory for Spin Ladders Using Angular-Momentum Coupled Bases
We study properties of two-leg Heisenberg spin ladders in a mean-field approximation using a variety of angular-momentum coupled bases. The meanfield theory proposed by Gopalan, Rice, and Sigrist, which uses a rung basis, assumes that the mean-field ground state consists of a condensate of spin-singlets along the rungs of the ladder. We generalize this approach to larger angular-momentum couple...
متن کاملA Plaquette Basis for the Study of Heisenberg Ladders
We employ a plaquette basis—generated by coupling the four spins in a 2 × 2 lattice to a well-defined total angular momentum—for the study of Heisenberg ladders with antiferromagnetic coupling. Matrix elements of the Hamiltonian in this basis are evaluated using standard techniques in angular-momentum (Racah) algebra. We show by exact diagonalization of small (2 × 4 and 2 × 6) systems that in e...
متن کاملEnergy shift and state mixing of Rydberg atoms in ponderomotive optical traps
We present a degenerate perturbation analysis in the spin–orbit coupled basis for Rydberg atoms in an optical trap. The perturbation matrix is found to be nearly the same for two states with the same total angular momentum j, and orbital angular momentum number l differing by 1, The same perturbation matrices result in the same state-mixing and energy shift. We also study the dependence of stat...
متن کاملEntanglement Spectra of Heisenberg Ladders of higher Spin
We study the entanglement spectrum of Heisenberg spin ladders of arbitrary spin length S in the perturbative regime of strong rung coupling. For isotropic spin coupling the the entanglement spectrum is, within first order perturbation theory, always proportional to the energy spectrum of the single chain with a proportionality factor being also independent of S. A more complicated situation ari...
متن کاملMagnetic excitations in the site-centered stripe phase: Spin-wave theory of coupled three-leg ladders
The success of models of coupled two-leg spin ladders in describing the magnetic excitation spectrum of La2−xBaxCuO4 had been interpreted previously as evidence for bond-centered stripes. In a recent article, however, we determined the magnetic coupling induced by the charge stripes between bondor site-centered spin stripes modeled by twoor three-leg ladders, respectively. We found that only th...
